Donald Trump Pens Letter Supporting Mike Leach

Who would have guessed that two off putting and arrogant personalities would be friends? But the relationship of Billionaire Donald Trump and deposed Texas Tech coach Mike Leach makes more sense than you might first think. For example: Leach enjoys making fun of his players' "Fat Little Girlfriends" and Trump enjoys making fun of Rosie O'Donnell. Hardly splitting hairs. Trump authored a new chapter in their friendship when he wrote an open letter of support which was made available on the Team Leach Facebook group.

I would like to state that Coach Mike Leach has had an exemplary career as a coach and his reputation among his colleagues and friends stands in his favor.

I've known Mike Leach for several years and he has always displayed tremendous enthusiasm and loyalty toward his team. I know he was dedicated to Texas Tech and to the Red Raiders, and I would hope to see them support him to the extent he supported them.
Sincerely,
Donald J. Trump

While its all well and good to have the endorsement of a public figure, Trump might be the worst possible one to have for a football coach. We are talking about the visionary that drove the USFL into the ground. A musician should sooner take career advice from Yoko Ono than anyone taking football advice from Trump.

Breaking TCA 2010 News: LAURENCE FISHBURNE IS FINALLY GELLING WITH THE 'CSI' TEAM ACCORDING TO CBS

THE SKINNY: While it’s been a rocky start with the transition from William Petersen to Laurence Fishburne on C.S.I., CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler feels that the actor has finally assimilated with the team with his second year appearing on the successful CBS series.

“He just fits now with the group and we're able to peel back the layers of who this man is and we’re now going to get more into the back story,” says Tassler. “It’s ironic, that the show, in its 10th season, it’s still No. 7 [in the ratings]. You can’t deny that Fishburne is a powerful actor and a force to be reckoned with. He’s assimilated more into the ensemble. Audiences have found that as he is more comfortable with his team, his team is more comfortable with him and the show is able to build more intimacy with the relationships. As he’s settled in and become part of the team, you’ve seen more humor. And as we look forward to the episodes in the second half of the season, you’re going to find more irreverence and more iconic stories we’ve done in the past and turn the whole Vegas experience on its ears.”

Natural, not supernatural, disasters

Q: Many have criticized Pat Robertson's suggestion that the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti was the work of the devil or a form of divine punishment. But if one believes God is good and intervenes in the world, why does God allow innocents to suffer? What is the best scriptural text or explanation of that problem you've ever read?

I'm not particularly concerned about flat earthers and Holocaust deniers in this country, because they have no influence. I can't even name one, and that's a good thing. Unfortunately, the same can't be said about Pat Robertson, a household name to Americans. Even worse, he is influential and respected by millions. According to the book of Robertson, the reason for every disaster is sin, and the solution usually involves sending him money.

While Haitians may not blame past sins for the earthquake, many have a worldview similar to Robertson's. Numerous Haitians gave thanks to God for keeping them alive. They, like Robertson, believed that what happened was the will of God.

Here's an alternative view. The "fault" lies under the Atlantic Ocean, not in the sins of Haitians. The earth's tectonic plates are neither good nor evil. The more we learn about their shifting, the better we will be able to predict future earthquakes.

And for those who still believe in the supernatural at the exclusion of scientific discovery, I'll confidently predict when you will again see God's wrath: July 11, 2010, the next total solar eclipse. And my home state of South Carolina will see such wrath on August 21, 2017. Fortunately, most people no longer think of an eclipse as a warning from God. Science works whether you believe in it or not.

24: Season 8 Hour 3 & 4 Review and Discussion

The last 24 hours of my life have been interesting. I have been responding to comments and emails of all kinds regarding my initial review and discussion of part 1 of 24’s Season 8 launch. Last night’s offerings featured a cast comprised of both new and familiar characters and even more familiar goings-on inside the first 88 minutes. Would the second half of the premiere provide us with something more filling? Or were we locked into an all-too-familiar Jack-based fate? The answer came shortly after tonight’s second hour ended in the way that, as a one fan so eloquently tweeted:

“…I give tonight’s second episode Five Whirring, Bloody Buzzsaws Out of Five!”

Once again it’s time to don the covert manpurse, load your .40cal H&K, and strap in for a spoiler-ridden review of the third and fourth hours of 24 Season 8!

These reviews are, as stated above, filled with story-decimating SPOILERS. Readers beware…

Last hour we left the venerable and determined Jack Bauer with a new but somehow familiar free reign to operate, with Chloe at his side and one goal – find the assassin targeting Middle East President Hassan at all costs! Jack heads to one of the outlying neighborhoods of New York on a lead that Chloe brandishes from a traffic cam. Jack then does some real detective work, by paying off a basketball-playing youth who has seen the man he’s looking for recently arrive by cab. The young lad directs Jack to a blue house across the the court where he saw the man go. As Jack investigates, he sees the ghastly corpse of a semi-dressed police officer who’s been shot in the head. Jack draws his weapon and clears the house and calls Chloe to get more intel.

Jack suddenly realizes that police have been dispatched to the house and only one suspect remains in the house with a gun – him. A partial explanation and taser gun later, Jack awakens strapped to a chair getting the first beating of 2010 from a justice-seeking policeman. Eventually, the policeman’s partner assists Jack in putting a stop to the vengeful beating and the two of them are able to get the vital intel about the now-dead officer to the powers at CTUNY, who piece together where the now dead cop was supposed to be on detail. This, along with a faux bomb threat inside the UN eventually reveal that the bomb is not actually in the UN building itself, but somewhere in the actual road/path that is being cleared for President Hassan’s emergency exit.

As the second hour of this evening’s offering ignites, the Russian mobster who has set the lethal trap arms the bomb hidden under a manhole cover and prepares to push the button to kill President Hassan. Agent Cole (Freddie Prinze Jr.) is able use his car to ram the presidential vehicle out of the blast zone and ends up saving the life of President Hassan.

Meanwhile, Agent Cole extracts himself from the car, ensures that President Hassan is in a new able-to-escape vehicle, and notices a frumpy, out of place police officer and realizes that this is the man they’ve been looking for. The Russian mobster realizes that the plan has been foiled and runs into one of New York’s many abandoned, yet exceptionally lit buildings and receives a call from President Hassan’s brother, Omar, who inquires as to his brother’s status. “He survived,” he states, “and soon they’ll know it was you who was involved.” Realizing that the walls of justice are quickly closing around him, Omar takes advantage of the pen he usually signs brotherly checks with and stabs one of the many in-proximity guards in the neck and makes his escape.

Back at CTU, Dana receives a call from her former manlover, Kevin, and they engage in conversation that completely derails the moment and pace of the program. I didn’t see nor will I see any value to this wayward interaction so I shant share anything else about it.

Jack has now traveled halfway across New York to arrive at the blast scene in just 4 minutes, and takes up arms with Cole to hunt for the assassin inside the aforementioned abandoned building. The Russian mobster gets the drop on Cole, who clearly doesn’t watch enough 24, and orders him to his knees. Jack gets the drop on The Russian mobster who clearly has missed the many syndicated repeats of 24 in his motherland, creating yet another dead Russian mobster for this 8th season of 24. Jack is able to capture the ornate tattoos from the most-recent dead body and sends it along to CTUNY for posterity and research.

Beaver tapped to lead Benton County Commission

Benton County Commissioner Jim Beaver went from new kid on the block to leader of the pack Monday when he was voted board chairman.

Beaver, who was elected to the board in November 2008, will take over chairman duties from Commissioner Max Benitz Jr. in January and lead the board through next year.

Benitz nominated Beaver for the position at the beginning of the board's Monday morning meeting in Prosser. The nomination was approved 2-1.

Commissioner Leo Bowman, board chairman pro-tem, questioned Benitz's choice and wondered aloud why he wasn't nominated. Bowman, who will remain chairman pro-tem, voted against the nomination.

The chairman position typically rotates among the three commissioners, with the pro-tem in line to become the next chairman.

Bowman said during the meeting that he was confused by Benitz's nomination and questioned why he was being bypassed. Bowman has served as chairman four times in his 13 years on the board.

Benitz said he nominated Beaver because of the former Kennewick mayor's experience crafting biennial budgets. Benton County plans to draft a biennial budget beginning next year.

"I feel with the current budget situation that we have facing Benton County and moving forward toward a two-year budget cycle, I think it's important we utilize the expertise of Commissioner Beaver," Benitz told the Herald after the meeting.

After the meeting, Bowman said he had nothing more to say about the decision.

The board chairman is responsible for leading commission meetings, speaking for the board, working with the county administrator and providing direction to other commissioners. There is no pay raise.

Asked about his expertise in preparing biennial budgets, Beaver quipped, "Well, six consecutive terms as mayor of Kennewick is pretty good."

Beaver plans to begin working on the county's first biennial budget next month by identifying objectives, listing goals and creating a process to achieve them. Beaver said he will sit down with other elected officials and ask them to prepare a list of priorities.

"I want to have meetings with elected officials about four times a year," Beaver said, adding, "I want to see where they want to be in five to 10 years."

"I want to heighten the level of communication," he said.

Beaver said a biennial budget will force elected officials and department heads to focus on long-term planning. "It stretches the planning horizon."

Beaver said creating a culture of long-term planning will be the biggest challenge facing the county as it develops the new budget. He said elected officials and department heads often begin to grasp and embrace the concept of a two-year budget after completing two of them.

Benitz said he didn't consult with Beaver before making the nomination Monday, but Beaver said he had expressed interest in the position to County Administrator David Sparks.

Beaver said Monday that he's excited to begin the position next week, but Benitz warned being chairman isn't as glamorous as it sounds.

"You get to sign a lot more papers and talk to the press," Benitz said.

The best of The Naughts: top films of the 2000s

It is a truism that time passes more quickly as one ages; a decade in the life of an octogenarian represents, after all, a smaller percentage of total life than it does for a twentysomething.

But I still haven’t hit my 50s, and so when it dawned on me a couple months ago that I would be responsible for writing up an article about the best films of the ‘00s, my instantaneous and completely honest reaction was: “But it hasn’t been a decade yet!”

No, I wasn’t nitpicking about whether decades start and finish in years that end in 9s or 1s or 0s. Rather, I was thinking that there was more time ahead, that I hadn’t seen enough films of quality, that the truly great works of the decade that I will forever refer to as The Naughts were still ahead of us.

And then I checked the record.

(And, yes, there is a record.)

And it was shinier than I had remembered.

Supernatural to Continue with a Sixth Season?

Fans of the CW Network's Winchester Brothers may have another season to look forward to. Entertainment Weekly's Ausiello Files is reporting that Supernatural may have another season left in it, according to CW Network president Dawn Ostroff.

"I think he's in that state of mind," she says. "I had lunch with Eric the other day and he's really excited about the show right now. I think he feels this season has been really satisfying for him. He's certainly not running out of ideas by any stretch of the imagination."

Ostroff also points to the ratings success of the show, which has been growing even in its fifth year.

The ratings are up," she says. "We have more young women coming to the show than ever before. There aren't a lot of shows that you can say are doing better in their fifth year."

Sci Fi Wire reports that Kripke had a "five-year plan" in mind for the show, but, while his contract expires this after this year, stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are signed on for another year as well.

We'll be sure to keep you posted on any news of a sixth season of Supernatural as soon as more information comes in. Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins, Jim Beaver and airs on Thursday nights at 9 PM ET on the CW Network.

PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Plays Down to Final Table

At the biggest PCA event ever, competition has been incredibly tough and many poker pros have ran into PokerStars qualifiers that have shown very sharp skills, despite the fact that many PokerStars pros made deep runs, only one of them remains in the tournament: John Duthie, who is the founder of the European Poker Tour and also invented the PCA event, has always been on the executive side of the tournaments, but this time around he could be receiving the trophy and not awarding it. There’s a group of players that will stand in his way and outplaying them won’t be an easy task.

The money bubble was burst on day three and it was the PokerStars qualifier John Leathart who had the unfortunate luck of taking such position. He won his ticket to the PCA in a $33 satellite and fell just one position short of taking at least $15K home with him.

Some of the early chip leaders like Wayne Bentley and Praz Bansi had outstanding performances. While unfortunately their tournament life is over, at least they are not going home empty handed.

Day four brought some surprises but Ryan D’Angelo sure was no surprise - he has run over his opponents and will be starting day five with the largest chip stack. His opponents at the table are Tyler Reiman, Barry Shulman, Harrison Gimbel, Thomas Koral, Benjamin Zamani, Zachary Goldberg and Aage Ravn.

PokerStars scheduled the amFAR charity event for this passed weekend during the PCA festivities at the Bahamas. Many celebrities participated in the event and there was a good number of poker pros as well. Some of the people that contributed to the noble cause were Jaydee Nicole, Kelly Rowland, Montel Williams, Kenneth Cole, Carlos Bernard, Boris Becker, Fatima de Melo, Mats Sundin and Jerome Le Banner among many others. The top prize was won by the PokerStars qualifier Spencer Benjafield and $97K from the total amount raised went directly into the charity.

SUPERNATURAL "Sam, Interrupted" Clips

Supernatural is finally back! After weeks of waiting we're getting the brothers back on TV. Now the question is, how are they going to defeat the devil? Because last time I checked it wasn't as easy as it sounds. Although I can't say that I'm in a hurry because I am quite enjoying watching Mark Pelligreno as the devil. Either way, I'm just glad we're getting an all new episode this Thursday. But for now enjoy the clips below.

Synopsis: SUPERNATURAL "Sam, Interrupted" Season 5 Episode 11 – A former hunter named Martin, who is currently institutionalized, calls Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) for help investigating a case in the mental hospital. The brothers get themselves admitted as patients to check out the mysterious monster that is attacking the patients, but their incarceration pushes both to the breaking point as they unleash their inner demons against each other.

'24': Katee Sackhoff, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Fre

Coming off of a DC-set season that even naysayers agree was much, much better than Season 6 (aka “The Season with Mushroom Cloud, the Evil Grandpa, and Rick Schroder”), 24 has moved its base of operations to New York for the eighth season. To reflect the show’s new setting, billboards across America are proclaiming: “New York Gets Jacked.” I don’t know what that means, but I like it.

The show hosted a red carpet premiere in New York last week and EW.com was there to chat with Kiefer Sutherland ask vital questions to the supporting cast. (I labored hard to get top-secret intel, Ausiello-style, but the cast was pretty tight-lipped; thus, this post can only earn a VERY MILD SPOILER ALERT.) The Season 8 premiere kicks off tonight.

Director Brad Turner on the possibility of another season of 24: “We can tell you one thing for sure: we’re not picked up yet. What I’ve been saying to everybody is that if the audience shows up, that’s a very good possibility. Because people – Kiefer and Howard [Gordon] – want to do it again. Which is good for our fans. But our fans have to realize that waiting for the DVD is not gonna help us. We gotta mobilize and watch the show.”

Freddie Prinze Jr. on Cole’s relationship with Jack Bauer: “It’s not at the mentor stage. The stakes are a little bit too big for ‘lessons to be learned.’ But they have a lot of similarities. They’re both ex-marines. Cole holds the position that Jack had in Season 1, as the head of Field Operations for CTU. Where they differ is this: the government has failed Jack numerous, numerous times, and it hasn’t done that to Cole yet. Jack lives in the gray area. Cole is very black and white. He’s not willing to sacrifice humanity or morality to get the job done. He knows that’s wrong. His foundation sort of gets shattered throughout the season.”

Prinze Jr. on Cole’s relationship with Katee Sackhoff’s Dana: “They’re engaged, and there’s a past to her character that he wasn’t really aware of. As it comes to light, it affects his relationship with her, but also with Jack. It’s one of those things that challenge his suit of armor.”

Katee Sackhoff introduces us to her 24 character, Dana Walsh: “I like to think of Dana and Cole as the Ken and Barbie of CTU. If Dana was a Barbie, she would be Career Barbie. Cole would be Captain America Ken.”

Sackhoff on shooting 24 compared with Battlestar Galactica: “The pace of Battlestar was slower. It took longer to do everything, and we worked these hours that were just absolutely insane. With 24, this is their eighth year, they’ve got this down to a complete vibe. You work one day a week, they get ya in, they get ya out. You kind of feel unemployed. At home, you’re like, ‘Do I have a job?’ Occasionally I find myself calling my agents, going ‘I need a job. Oh, that’s right, I have one.’ I never work. It’s fantastic!”

Mary Lynn Rajskub on where we find Chloe at the start of Season 8: “Chloe hasn’t been at her job at CTU. She’s been at home with her child. So when I start, I’m totally behind. And that lady [points to Sackhoff] tries to comfort me…She’s trouble. She tries to be so nice and tell me it’s gonna be okay. I just get angry. But I catch up, and I get my two cents in there. Nobody listens to me, and I take matters into my own hands.”

Chris Diamantopoulos on comparisons between Rob Weiss and Obama’s Chief of Staff: “I think he’s actually fashioned around Rahm Emanuel. He’s a bit of a bulldog. He won’t take ‘no.’ I knew that Rahm was a big influence in [the character], and so I paid close attention to him in the news.”

Anil Kapoor on Omar Hassan, the president of Kamistan: “What I liked about this character was that he’s very real. He’s charismatic, but still he’s very human. Sometimes you feel: he’s a good man, will he succeed? Sometimes you feel: he’s very weak, how did he ever become a president? He looks like such a weak man. But he isn’t. The strongest and the most powerful people also sometimes look the weakest. That’s what makes them more exciting for actors to perform..I made my own backstory. He started from a very ordinary family. He rose the ranks, studied abroad, educated himself, then he came back to his own country, and realized that his own country was regressing. He wanted to come up with his own ideas, to become a leader. He initially joined the army, then he went into political life. He got the confidence of the people of the country, and became president. I imagined all that going into the character. Then I read a lot of books.”

Annie Wersching on Renee’s journey in this upcoming season: “She definitely continues on the dark path, for sure. And not in a good way. She saw a lot last year and was very affected by what happened. She starts in a very dark, damaged place, even more so than she ended the last [season.]“

Mykelti Williamson gives us a little tidbit about his character, New York CTU Director Brian Hastings: “He’s not crazy about Jack Bauer, nor Chloe. He thinks Chloe is completely useless.”

Williamson on whether or not his character will break the CTU director death curse: “One of the exciting things about this show is you have to be in the moment. Each week when you get the script, you read through it and you don’t know what to expect…Anything could happen to anybody. And that’s what’s so much fun about this show. My character’s very much alive, but we’re starting episode 19 when we get home.”
