Senator Arbib said more than 1100 young trades apprentices had been employed in Queensland in the first six weeks of the Apprentice Kickstart program.
Under Kickstart, the Rudd Government has more than tripled the commencement bonus for employers in the first year, from $1500 to $4850.
Senator Arbib said the economic downturn particularly hurt apprenticeships, with commencements dropping by about 10,000 across Australia in the past year.
Member for Capricornia Kirsten Livermore said the bonus was available until February 28.
“I want to be sure Rockhampton gets its fair share of the funding and encourage any business which is thinking of a new apprentice to act now,” Ms Livermore said.
“We need to be ready for the economic boom.”
